Employee Job Description
Title Construction Technology Instructor
Reports to: KACC Principal
Job Goal: Assist Kankakee Area Career Center in meeting their vision and mission by providing exceptional education in construction technology in an atmosphere where students may develop the emotional, psychological, and maturity necessary for a successful career. Provide necessary training for students to transfer their skills to the construction field or on to post-secondary education.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Subject Knowledge
- Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of construction technology field/discipline.
- Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of construction technology.
- Stay current in construction subject matter, technological advancements in the field of construction technology; teaching methodologies and innovations through continued professional development and involvement in professional organizations and course specific advisory committee
- Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience of students.
- Implement soft skills, professional development, and academic component for a well-rounded program.
- Ability to read blueprints and understand business management of construction.
- Teaching Duties
- Create course load appropriate to the junior and senior students served at KACC
- Plan and organize instruction in ways which maximize student learning
- Develop, update and maintain course syllabi in curriculum binder.
- Communicate instruction plan to Principal in weekly lesson plans
- Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
- Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.
- Modify instruction, when appropriate, according to diverse student needs (i.e.: 504’s and IEP’s are to be taken into consideration)
- Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
- Ensure core competencies of construction technology are embedded in curriculum and students are proficient prior to being utilized at KACC house.
- Plan student activities, programs and/or field trips as a continuation of the construction curriculum.
- Present lectures and conduct discussions to increase student knowledge and competence, using visual aides.
- Student Learning Evaluation
- Establish Student Learning Objectives (SLO’s)/outcomes
- Follow KACC established grading policies to incorporate employability skills, productivity, properly weighting for tests, exams, etc. in a fair and consistent manner
- Return evaluation of student work promptly to promote maximum learning
- Maintain accurate records of student progress to ensure parent/guardians have up-to-date information on the KACC Parent Portal
- Submit progress reports, quarterly and semester grades accurately and on time per KACC established schedule.
- Classroom Management
- Create and maintain an environment conducive to learning – in the classroom, shop and on-site at KACC house.
- Take reasonable and necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and KACC facility – with student safety being of the utmost importance following OSHA guidelines.
- Ensure adequate classroom and construction site tools and supplies are available to students.
- Maintain accurate records, including up-to-date contractor’s statement and submit necessary purchase orders for house and/or shop supplies and purchase following formal PO approval.
- Consult with parent and other involved personnel with any concerns regarding student intellectual, social emotional and physical development hindering student success.
- Make arrangements to be available to students for education-related purposes outside the traditional instructional day when required or requested – under reasonable terms
- General Employment Responsibilities
- Support Kankakee Area Career Center and Kankakee Area Regional Vocational Education System
- Maintain confidentiality of all student information
- Attend the following meetings/events:
- Weekly 8:05 meetings
- Monthly After-School Teacher meetings
- Teacher Professional Development Days
- Parent-Teacher Conferences
- Comply with all policies contained in the KACC Teacher’s Handbook published annually.
- Comply with all policies contained in the KACC Board Policy Manual (available electronically on Public Drive).
- Maintain excellent attendance
- When absent, provide clear instructions for a substitute to ensure students have full opportunity for learning.
- Maintain professional relationships, i.e.: Homebuilders Association, KCC Advisory Committee, etc.
- Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology from an accredited institution with a minimum of 2,000 hours of professional employment in construction technology or, 8,000 hours of employment with verification of construction technician qualifications in one or more construction method(s) in construction technology and willingness to attend college-level classes to earn Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology
- Computer Competence in Google and/or Microsoft Office suite
- Written and Verbal Communication skills
VII: Preferred Qualifications
Construction Instruction Experience, either with another school or professional trade organization
Verification of current or past certifications
OSHA-10/OSHA 30 Certified
VIII: Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand 4-6 hours per day
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, crouch, kneel, push and pull, and climb ladders and stairs.
- Ability to lift 25-60 Pounds
- Ability to occasionally work at a desk, use computer, keyboard and mouse
IX : Miscellaneous
- Mandatory Fingerprint/Background Check prior to employment
- Mandatory Physician’s Statement Certifying Physical Ability to Complete Tasks assigned.
- Salary Range: $54,000 - $60,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
- Sick Time: 13 Sick Days 4 personal
- Retirement Benefits: Employees are eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Illinois, in accordance with state regulations.
