Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide trauma-informed counseling, crisis intervention, and social-emotional support to students across all grade levels (early childhood to post-secondary).
  • Conduct individual and small-group interventions for students experiencing mental health concerns, trauma, grief, family instability, substance use, homelessness, and other barriers to learning.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, restorative justice, and mindfulness strategies to support student well-being.
  • Conduct functional behavioral assessments (FBA) and collaborate with teams to develop Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) that incorporate trauma-informed strategies.
  • Facilitate transition support for students moving between grade levels, entering high school, and preparing for post-secondary education, employment, or independent living.
  • Support students experiencing crisis situations, including suicide risk, self-harm, abuse/neglect, and severe emotional distress, ensuring proper safety planning and referrals.
  • Work with district and school leadership to develop and implement trauma-sensitive policies and practices.
  • Provide professional development and coaching for educators and staff on trauma-informed teaching, de-escalation techniques, SEL integration, and mental health literacy.
  • Assist schools in creating safe, nurturing, and supportive classroom environments that address the needs of students with a history of trauma.
  • Support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and help identify students needing targeted or intensive interventions.
  • Collaborate with special education teams to develop and support IEP and 504 plans, ensuring students receive appropriate social-emotional and behavioral interventions.
  • Build strong partnerships with families, providing guidance on trauma-informed parenting, mental health resources, and community supports.
  • Connect families to counseling services, food and housing support, employment programs, and financial assistance when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with community agencies, healthcare providers, and mental health organizations to coordinate student support.
  • Advocate for equitable access to mental health resources for historically marginalized students and families
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student case notes, assessments, and progress reports in alignment with district and state policies.
  • Utilize data collection and analysis to inform decisions on student interventions and systemic changes.
  • Advocate for mental health initiatives, social-emotional curriculum integration, and increased funding for trauma-informed supports at the district level.
  • Support schools in developing restorative discipline models to reduce punitive measures and increase student engagement.
  • Stay current with best practices in trauma-informed care, mental health interventions, and social work ethics through ongoing professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned: This position is dynamic and evolving based on the needs of the students, staff, and district. The social worker will take on additional responsibilities as necessary to ensure a holistic, student-centered approach to mental health and well-being.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Social Work Endorsement.
  • Experience in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and mental health services for children and young adults.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a school, clinical, or community-based setting with diverse student populations.
  • Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development, mental health disorders, ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and evidence-based interventions.
  • Experience working with students across early childhood through post-secondary settings, including transition planning, is preferred.
  • Understanding of IDEA, Section 504, MTSS, IEP development, and restorative practices.
  • Ability to facilitate professional development and coaching on trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning (SEL), and behavioral interventions for staff.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive and equity-centered practices to support diverse learners.
  • Strong skills in collaboration, crisis management, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Experience working with community-based mental health providers, child welfare agencies, and local support networks.
