Duties

Job Description:

  1. Develops and administers a program which reflects the individual needs of the school.
  2. Develops appropriate policies for an effective and efficient operation.
  3. Utilizes materials and equipment to meet individual differences and abilities.
  4. Has a thorough knowledge of print and digital resources and provides guidance in their use.
  5. Helps teach media skills to students and helps students develop research, information literacy, and digital skills.
  6. Helps students develop an appreciation for reading for information and for pleasure by using both print, nonprint, and digital resources. 
  7. Supports school literacy initiatives and reading programs and provides readers’ advisory for students and staff.
  8. Administers efficient workspaces for individual, small group, and whole class reading, viewing, listening, and creating.
  9. Selects, organizes, distributes, and promotes a general collection of print, nonprint, and digital materials and equipment to meet the needs of the education system and follows Material Selection Guidelines.
  10. Assists staff and students in obtaining print, nonprint, and digital resources, including interlibrary loan of material.
  11. Maintains a physically attractive and pleasant environment conducive to study and research.
  12. Evaluates the collection on a regular basis using Material Withdrawal / Weeding Guidelines.
  13. Maintains a schedule of library activities which is consistent, yet flexible.
  14. Catalogs, processes, circulates, promotes, and repairs materials promptly and efficiently, using current technology and consistent standards.
  15. Plans and prepares a library budget.
  16. Establishes and maintains a system of inventorying and accounting for all library materials.
  17. Maintains the library’s computer/multimedia/digital resources and communicates with technicians to resolve technical issues.
  18. Collaborates with and supports classroom teachers in the preparation, presentation, and execution of units or assignments that utilize information resources.
  19. Participates as a learner and teacher in district wide meetings, in-service, and committees; participates in educational and professional activities and associations.
  20. Assists in the supervision of the library staff and in the selection and supervision of student assistants.
  21. Interacts with students in a situationally appropriate manner.
  22. Holds students responsible for behavior.
  23. Reacts to students’ behavior consistently.
