Duties
Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent, the Director of School Safety is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves developing, implementing, and enforcing safety and security policies, access control procedures, accident prevention measures, risk management initiatives, and emergency response programs, including fire safety and traffic enforcement. Additionally, the Director oversees and supervises the District’s School Safety Liaisons to maintain a comprehensive approach to school safety.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain a District Safety program, including:
- Appropriate lighting and signage
- Building safety and surveillance systems
- Equipment, student, and personal identification procedures
- Visitor registration and access control
- Emergency response plans for evacuations, lockdowns, and crises
- Staff safety training and orientation programs
- Strategic deployment of safety personnel
- Serve as the District’s liaison to community law enforcement, the Juvenile Justice System, Child Services, and other related agencies.
- Assess school security needs, identify relevant issues, and implement action plans to enhance safety practices.
- Manage the placement, use, and maintenance of electronic security equipment; oversee proper notice posting, retention, storage, security, and disposal of recorded footage in consultation with the custodian of records.
- Develop a proactive departmental philosophy, set expectations for attendance, dress, and performance, and establish operational procedures for safety personnel.
- Serve as a liaison between emergency responders and school staff during crises.
- Prepare and maintain records of all mandated building safety drills.
- Coordinate with municipal agencies on accident investigations, crossing guard deployment, traffic management, property protection, health and fire inspections, and emergency planning.
Additional Notes
Contract Period and Work Hours:
- 12-month position with a contract period of July 1 through June 30.
- Work Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Attendance at Board of Education meetings required.
- Evening and weekend attendance required for some school or District related events.
