Duties
Reporting to the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, provides leadership and integrates and executes the policies and expectations of the State Board of Education, including the ISBE Strategic Plan as the Director of Standards & Instruction; directs, oversees, and administers programs (e.g., transitional math & English, competency-based education, advanced learners programs, professional learning for educators, resource development in the core content areas ), operations and staff; provides leadership and support in programming and compliance for districts and other educational organizations throughout Illinois; provides leadership in cross functional department work (e.g., ESSA, special education, multilingual services, early childhood); monitors and develops department budget; advocates for equity for all students.
- Provides leadership and directs the overall functions and programs of the department including, but not limited to: curricular resources aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), high quality professional learning for educators, gifted learners, transitional Math & English, competency based educational opportunities.
- Provides leadership, support, and resources in response to district needs.
- Monitors and evaluates the activities of projects administrators and staff to insure the application and direction of agency policies, state/federal rules, guidelines, and fiscal accountability.
- Represents and speaks accurately on behalf of the State Board of Education to school districts, educational organizations, other state/federal agencies, committees, and the public concerning the interpretation of agency policies, procedures, or actions.
- Initiates and models active and collaborative leadership in cross functional department work with demonstrated improved outcomes for all children (e.g., CTE, Educator Effectiveness, Charter Schools, IL-Empower, wellness, multilingual learners, special needs students).
- Develops and implements systems for public engagement to ensure stakeholders have a voice in all programs having statewide impact.
- Works with staff to develop and manage grants, contracts, and budgets.
- Develops and recommends policies, programs, procedures, and plans to ensure compliance with legislation and to improve the effectiveness of program implementation with demonstrated improved outcomes for students (e.g., ESSA and all other department programs).
- Evaluates staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
