Duties
Job Description:
- 7:30-3:30
- $17 hourly, no benefits, 30 minute unpaid lunch
- Assist Pre-K teacher and Kindergarten teacher as needed
- Supervise recess periods
- Assist Principal as needed
- Maintain professionalism: on time, regular attendance, professional dress and behavior with students and fellow staff etc.
- Must love children and Jesus!
Communication Norms with Students:
- Get down to same level; make eye contact; calm voice at conversational volume
- Replace “Don’t” with “Do”: Instead of “Stop wiggling”, use, “Calm bodies, please”
- Offer choices: “You can clean up over here or you can clean up over there”
- Wait time - Three second rule for responses: It takes three seconds or more for most toddlers to process verbal communication; allow three seconds before expecting a response.
- By the end of the day, every child should have received a personal affirmation from at least one pre-K team member.
- Explain what they should be doing. Keep directions short and simple. Remind them what to do before and during the task. Limit saying what NOT to do after the fact. Ask the students to explain or model what they should be doing. Do NOT ask the student “why” he/she is doing something.
- Recognize the positives - call out students who are doing things correctly (thanks for sitting correctly); give thumbs up or high fives, etc. Model positive talk by using please, thank you, good job, etc.
- When the students get louder, you need to get quieter. Do not try to outshout them. Keep the volume down. Try whispering.
- Use consistent verbal cues to get students attention (i.e. 1-2-3 eyes on me, class-class-yes-yes, flip lights on/off, clap hands, etc.)
- Use more non-verbal cues to get students back on task (i.e. teacher look, move near them, hand raised, finger over mouth, etc).
- Try to privately and quietly address individual students who are behaving inappropriately. This will be less distracting for the rest of the class, especially during nap time.
- Use misbehavior as a teachable moment - teach what to do (replacement behavior). You might need to wait until everyone has calmed down before addressing behavior.
