Duties

Job Summary: 

The macOS & Systems Engineer supports the district's macOS and related technology environments, ensuring the smooth operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of systems. This role focuses on macOS, JAMF administration, scripting, and other system integration tasks while collaborating with team members to enhance the district's technological infrastructure. The macOS & Systems Engineer will report to the Executive Director of Technology.

 

The macOS & Systems Engineer will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • macOS and JAMF Administration:
    • Administer the JAMF server, including backend configurations, distribution points, and smart group scopes.
    • Manage JAMF Connect and its integration with identity providers (IdPs).
    • Handle macOS device provisioning, management, and troubleshooting.
    • Ensure proper certificate distribution for secure Wi-Fi profiles using ADCS connectors.
    • Test and communicate Mac updates district-wide to staff, ensuring smooth transitions and minimizing disruptions.
    • Document and communicate troubleshooting steps and solutions effectively, demonstrating strong written communication skills to effectively relay updates and use cases to district staff.
  • System Integration and Automation:
    • Create and modify scripts using terminal commands, shell scripting (sh and bash), and Unix-based solutions to enhance system performance and automate tasks.
    • Develop and manage scripts for Google account creation and provisioning via Azure.
    • Set up SSO integrations and provisioning between Azure and other systems.
    • Troubleshoot and maintain the DMZ server for JAMF communications.
    • Oversee Chrome browser management for Macs.
  • Support and Training:
    • Provide technology specialist support to central office staff members for any issues related to Macs.
    • Create and facilitate professional development sessions for Mac users and building technology specialists across the district, focusing on Macs and JAMF.
    • Support onboarding efforts at the beginning of the school year district-wide and throughout the year, specifically for central office staff.
  • Classroom and Administrative Support:
    • Address Mac-related issues across the district, including at the JEH Administration Center.
    • Manage classroom technology, including document cameras, Epson pens, Logitech crayons, charging solutions, and specialized software (e.g., Boardmaker and Adobe). Responsibilities include obtaining quotes for purchasing, keeping stock of inventory, and troubleshooting with building technology specialists if there is an escalated need.
    • Manage all Macs across the district for student use in FUSE/Media Arts labs. Responsibilities include obtaining quotes for purchasing and upkeep, keeping track of lifecycle purchasing and replacements, and ensuring the labs are fully operational and updated.
  • Lifecycle and Asset Management:
    • Oversee the district’s fleet of Macs, with responsibility for long-term lifecycle management efforts, including budgeting, planning, and executing device rollovers.
    • Manage the Ticket System and Asset Management platform district-wide, including updating and uploading asset tag information for hardware.
    • Identify support needs and create knowledge base (K-Base) articles to assist users across the district.
  • Printer and Peripheral Management:
    • Configure print queues and policies in JAMF for printers, ensuring accurate setup and smooth functionality.
    • Identify and implement printer features for secure and efficient printing solutions across the district.
    • Support district-wide changes to printing processes, including developing and sharing best practices for staff.
    • Create and maintain knowledge base (K-Base) articles to provide guidance on printing solutions and troubleshooting.
  • District-Wide Technology Support:
    • Support district-wide technologies as needed. Responsibilities include managing inventory, obtaining quotes for purchasing, troubleshooting technical issues as necessary, and addressing escalated support needs. 

Qualifications

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the macOS & Systems Engineer must possess the following qualifications: 

 

Education Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.

 

Experience Required: 

  • Proven experience in macOS systems management and JAMF administration.
  • Expertise in macOS troubleshooting and system deployment.
  • Proficiency in shell scripting (sh and bash) and Unix-based environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Azure, SSO integrations, and provisioning.
  • Familiarity with managing certificates and Chrome browser policies for Macs.
  • Understanding of classroom technology tools and software.
  • Certifications such as Apple Certified Support Professional (ACSP) or JAMF Certified Administrator (Jamf 300) are preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Proficient in macOS, Unix-based systems, and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.
  • Experience with typical productivity and collaboration software, including (but not limited to) Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to develop and deploy enterprise-grade software packages and maintain industry best practices.
  • Skilled in designing workflows, system configurations, and procedural improvements that align with organizational objectives and technological advancements.
  • Capable of synthesizing complex information, defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions. Experience with analytical tools and data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong project management skills, including defining project goals, coordinating team efforts, and monitoring progress towards achieving technological milestones.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, providing support and guidance to peers and junior staff, and collaborating with other departments to meet the district's technological and educational goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders and foster collaborative relationships.
  • Displays creativity and openness to new technologies; develops innovative approaches and solutions to technological and operational challenges.
  • Demonstrates a proactive, self-starter approach to professional development by seeking out learning opportunities and acquiring new skills independently when necessary. Actively stays informed about emerging technologies and industry trends to enhance expertise and adapt to evolving needs.

 

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting up to 35 pounds, bending, standing, and maneuvering around school facilities.
  • Travel between various locations within the district as needed.
