Duties

Job Summary

We seek a certified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing who works with students with hearing loss attending their home school and other educational sites. The Lead Itinerant Teacher will provide direct services per the IEP process to those students who have identified hearing loss; serve as a consultant to school personnel; evaluate students who have been referred through the appropriate channels; and promote interest in and an understanding of the implications of a hearing loss.

The Lead Itinerant will manage new student referrals and work with teams to determine student eligibility and recommendation for services. The Lead Itinerant will work with the HILIA Director to monitor the equity and consistency of services in addition to the advancement of the HILIA Program. The Lead Itinerant will use his/her expertise in the field of Deaf/Hard of Hearing to serve as a liaison to partner school districts, mentor and evaluate DHH staff, and work with the HILIA Director to plan and execute professional development.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Deaf and Hard of Hearing
2. Professional Educator License
3. Ability to communicate using Total Communication
4. A valid driver's license
5. Ability to travel within the HILIA (Heart of Illinois Low Incidence Association) member districts in a timely fashion. (https://roe17.org/resources/hilia)

Preferred Qualifications

1. One to three years experience as a Teacher of the Deaf
2. Experience managing an itinerant caseload
3. Ability to collaborate with a variety of educational professionals, including local school districts, parents, Laboratory school staff, and ISU staff and students
4. Experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment (CIs, BAHAs, FM Systems, and hearing aids
5. Experience with diagnostic assessments, recommendation for and implementation of services based upon the data collected
6. Experience with training students and teachers in the use and care of amplification systems
7. Good organization and communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members
8. Experience collaborating and creating professional development
9. Leadership experience within the field

Work Hours

Typically Monday through Friday school hours with occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods
2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis

Salary/Benefits

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$42,000 - $84,000, depending on years of experience & degree
