Duties
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the District’s facilities and prioritize the capital projects of the District.
- Supervise and regularly direct all custodial and maintenance staff (3-11 FTE employees).
- Provide suggestions and recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent for Business/CSBO regarding employee evaluations for custodial and maintenance staff.
- Co-lead applicant screening and interviews.
- Provide recommendations to and collaborate with Superintendent of Schools and the Assistant Superintendent for Business/CSBO concerning promotions, demotions, and dismissals of custodial and maintenance staff.
- Manage the schedule for all custodial and maintenance staff, including scheduling employees’ shifts and approving overtime and vacation requests.
- Provide in-service training and instruction for custodial and maintenance staffs to promote efficient and updated work methods, including safety precautions.
- Maintain pertinent records, reports, and documents as required by law.
- Attend meetings and work with administration in all related areas requiring outside contractual services and completing projects required by applicable law.
- Oversee all construction and capital improvement projects.
- Develop and implement program to maintain the physical school facility (indoor and outdoor) in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness and safety.
- Assist with selection of custodial supplies and equipment, including quantity to be ordered, and used throughout the year.
- Responsible for scheduling the required inspections and the record keeping of the testing of all equipment and items including, but not limited to fire alarm, fire extinguisher, elevator, bleacher, draperies, lead in the drinking water, emergency lighting, kitchen oven hood, pest control, and coordinating required inspections with outside companies, including the 3-year and 6 month asbestos inspection.
- Maintain an accurate inventory and be responsible for all equipment, tools, supplies and other movable property, stored in and used in the building. Responsible for the distribution of supplies to custodians weekly, or as needed.**.
- Conduct and oversee, during the summer months, an intensive cleaning and repair program in consultation with the Assistant Superintendent/CSBO or Superintendent of Schools.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be knowledgeable of the School Emergency Operations
- Provide constant inspection and safeguarding of the building, grounds, equipment and mechanical apparatus, including boilers.
- Responsible for assisting with daily cleaning, as required, including the cafeteria after lunch and maintaining the shop area.
- Assist with the setup and movement of furniture or equipment and supplies.
- Assist with receiving, distribution, and storage of deliveries (food, milk, supplies, equipment, etc.) made to the school during the day.
- Ensure that the building is properly heated and ventilated and exercise economy in the use of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Ensure that walkways, driveways, and steps are free from ice and snow and plow and/or salt blacktop areas when needed.
- With the Head Custodian, keep all grounds free from rubbish and be responsible for cutting the grass, trimming the trees and shrubs, and general maintenance of the lawn and grounds, including upkeep of US and Illinois flags displayed at the school.
- When the Head Custodian is absent, ensure parking lot is blocked off from public automobile access during bus arrival and departure.
- When the Head Custodian is absent, ensure that, at the beginning of the day, doors are unlocked and lights are turned on throughout the building. **
- Perform driving and delivery duties as required in the absence of the Head Custodian.
- Oversee and perform preventative maintenance and perform repair functions within the building. These repair functions are to include basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring, masonry and other trade work as needed, and all other repairs and maintenance necessary to keep the physical school facility (indoor and outdoor) in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness and safety.
- Troubleshoot and repair building systems (i.e. clocks, fire alarms, intercoms, HVAC, temperature controls, etc.)
- Operate and maintain District vehicles and power equipment, and follow a regular service
- Be respectful to others and courteous to teachers. Maintain friendly relationship with students and be courteous and helpful to visitors.
- Comply promptly and cheerfully to requests made by Building Administration.
- Observe all Board of Education policies, regulations, administrative rules, and procedures.
- Participate in job-related professional development.
- Guards the confidentiality of all information placed in charge of this office. Breach of this trust shall be grounds for dismissal.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and the Assistant Superintendent for Business/CSBO.
Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma.
- English fluency (speaking and writing) required to communicate and understand and follow safety requirements and standards.
- Hold a valid State of Illinois Drivers’ license and excellent driving record.
- Be of good health and character.
- Be able to follow both written and oral directions.
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Be willing to work with and around adults and children.
- Be able to follow a set of work schedules and procedures.
- Be willing to learn new skills and follow directions.
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills.
- Possess basic computer skills including ability to efficiently use internet and e-mail.
- Have and maintain general knowledge of heating, cooling equipment, and sewer maintenance.
- Be able to perform minor electrical repairs.
- Be able to perform minor routine plumbing repairs.
- Be able to perform general carpentry repairs.
- Have basic knowledge of locks and door carpentry repairs.
- Be able to manage all emergency calls and situations 24 hours per day, 7 days per week (24/7).
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move at least 80 pounds, or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. A Functional Capacity Assessment may be required.
