Duties

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and evaluate the special education program to promote excellence and inclusion in the least restrictive environment.
  • Analyze data to inform progress towards the district’s vision and goals, effectively managing human and financial resources.
  • Uphold legal, ethical, and regulatory standards, ensuring the rights and responsibilities of staff, students, and parents are respected. 
  • Ensures that an IEP is developed and implemented for each child with a disability, who is eligible to receive special education services.
  • Coordinates the homebound and alternative services throughout the district including the supervision, assignment, and evaluation of homebound teachers.
  • Serve as a liaison for transition services and manage relationship with feeder districts and community organizations.
  • Develop and manage the special education budget, including securing and overseeing grants and funding.
  • Promote a healthy work environment, psychological safety, and professional development within the special education team.
  • Evaluates the performance of all staff assigned under direct supervision.
  • Plan and host quarterly BPAC meetings, ensure adherence to TBE and TPI mandates, and oversee EL student scheduling based on specific educational needs and assessment scores.
  • Manage WIDA screening and ACCESS testing for English Learners, along with the ongoing monitoring of students who have exited the EL program.
  • Complete required EL professional development, and prepare and submit annual EL program and plans and expenditure reports to the State Superintendent.
  • Maintain all student records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements. 
  • Coordinate special education programs throughout the district including the supervision and assignment of special education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, and other supportive personnel assigned to special education.
  • Relies on the standards of practice and educational standards to place students in classes and programs in the district, to assign staffing for special education students, and to select, and assign special education staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educator License, Director of Special Education endorsement, Previous administrative experience preferred or 5 years relevant special education experience in either teaching or direct service.
