Position: Guidance Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
- Master’s Degree School Counseling
OBJECTIVES
Under the supervision of the building principal and the Director of Student Services, the School Counselor will
provide education in the areas of high school, college and career readiness, as well as, work with school social workers to support general education students in their efforts to resolve personal, emotional and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered to them.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attends to crisis situations (e.g. child abuse, acute, chronic, and severe behavior problems, substance abuse, suicide, death, attendance, runaway, etc.).
- Maintains and respects confidentiality of students and staff.
- Serve as a team member in the school positive behavior system.
- Delivers direct and or consultative counseling services as indicated on the 504 plan.
- Identify gaps in achievement, attendance, discipline, opportunity and resources
- Develop annual student outcome goals based on student data.
- Use achievement, attendance and/or discipline data to create annual student outcome goals aligned with school improvement plans
- Provide appraisal and advisement in large-group, classroom, small-group and individual settings
- Provide short-term counseling in small-group and individual settings
- Make referrals to appropriate school and community resources
- Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, other school staff and education stakeholders for student achievement and success
- Facilitate in-service training or workshops for families, administrators, other school staff, teachers or other stakeholders to share school counseling expertise
- Assists with the coordination of 8th grade testing.
- Collaborates with all potential high schools SD 194 students may transition into.
- Organizes a career day opportunity.
- Organizes a step up day for 4th grade and 8th grade students.
- Collaborates with the building team to put together a reality store day.
- Works with and communicates regularly with parents as needed during school hours.
- Serves as an advocate for students.
- Monitors and provides for behavioral interventions for all students.
- Assists teachers with classroom behavior management.
- Assists the team to understand the student, his/her in school and out-of-school behavior, and how the many environments influences the student for purposes of educational planning.
- Assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy.
- Completes all required documentation, including, case notes, billing for Medicaid eligible students, and related service logs as applicable.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
- Ability to lift 25lbs.
- Occasional sitting, standing, walking, talking, bending, lifting, and stooping required.
- Occasional travel to various school locations required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in an environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively nonexistent.
