Duties

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary function of the Groundskeeper is to maintain grounds and participate in grounds construction activities necessary to assure an attractive campus environment that is safe, clean, healthy and presents no problems or interruptions to the educational program. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Listed below but not limited to 

  • Adheres to work schedule, assignments, and procedures specified by the Grounds Crew Supervisor 
  • Plants shrubs, trees and flowers; prunes trees and shrubs. Removes debris from stairs, parking lots, lawns, athletic fields and walks; rakes leaves and mows lawns 
  • Waters trees, shrubs and lawns and performs irrigation activities and maintenance 
  • Operates large power lawn mowers, edger’s, hand tools and utility vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping activities. Operates pick-up trucks and vans for hauling purposes and for trash and debris removal. Capable of operating vehicles listed while towing trailer 
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required. Assists in the maintenance of parking lots and other surfaces including asphalt repairs and minor masonry or plastering work as required 
  • Removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks and entryways as required. Installs and removes outdoor signs, parking and traffic control barriers and overhead banners as required 
  • May operate various snow removal equipment
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) year experience in  grounds maintenance; must have a current valid Illinois driver's license with acceptable driving records. 

Ability to pass a fingerprint criminal background check. 

Special Knowledge/Skills/Requirements

  • Knowledge of equipment, tools and procedures of grounds construction and care 
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening 
  • Skill in operating grounds maintenance and grounds construction equipment 
  • Ability to effectively communicate 
  • The ability to work effectively with people 
  • Must have a valid Driver’s Illinois License

Salary/Benefits

Starting Pay Rate: $15.00 per hour commensurate with experience
