Duties

Primary Objective:

  • Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Services to provide services for effective health programming for children from birth through age 21, assisting parents and professionals in meeting the health needs of children and youth with an awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

 Essential Job Functions:

  1. Serve as an advocate for all children and youth
  2. Consult and collaborate with educators, parents, children, and other professionals or agencies to improve student outcomes
  3. Provide direct professional nursing services, illness, and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment and in accordance with professional standards, school policy, and procedures and state law regarding nurse practice
  4. Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues
  5. Evaluates health status of students by means of maintain school health and immunization records
  6. Follow-up and enforce established Illinois Department of Public Health immunization requirements
  7. Assess the health needs and accommodations of students with regard to their individual health issues
  8. Develop, implement, and evaluate Individual Health Plans and Individual Emergency Plans as necessary
  9. Maintain and distribute health alerts to those with a need to know and to building crisis folders
  10. Act as a resource person for parents and students to secure needed medical, dental, or other treatment information using appropriate follow-up measures
  11. Interpret and act as a liaison between local schools and representatives of the medical profession, between parents, and school personnel regarding health related issues
  12. Coordinate activities for emergency care for illness and/or injury for the prevention of communicable diseases
  13. Protect students and staff by attention to environmental health factors
  14. Perform parent interviews regarding student’s health and complete Health History summaries for students with Individual Education Plans and Section 504 Plans
  15. Supervise the student's’ self administration of necessary medications at school per physician orders and school policies
  16. Participate in the formulation, yearly review, and revision of the total school health program
  17. Establish, monitor, and assess records to ensure that goals of health program have been met
  18. Implement federal, state, and county health-related mandates
  19. Maintain confidentiality following all federal, state, and local laws, including, but not limited to HIPAA and FERPA
  20. Plan and perform vision and hearing screenings as followed up health care as required by state guidelines
  21. Complete required yearly federal, state, and county health reports
  22. Act in concert with legal requirements and ethical codes of the profession
  23. Report all violations of rules and regulations to the building administration and Director of Student Services
  24. Engage in professional growth including continuous inquiry, professional development practices, application, and sharing of research-based practices
  25. Demonstrate cultural competence and behaviors consistent with the core values, visions, and mission of District 159
  26. Performs additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Appropriately licensed/certified by the Illinois State Board of Education
  • BSN Degree with minimum two years experience
  • CPR certified
  • Experience in blood-borne pathogens requirements and procedures

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • School Nurse Certification - PEL 
  • Pediatric nursing experience
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Hearing and Vision Screening Certified through Illinois Department of Public Health

Salary/Benefits

erms of Employment: 

  • 186 days per year, 7.5 hours per day
  • 4 paid holidays
  • 190 total days

 Benefits: 

  • Per MCSA Negotiated Agreement

 FLSA Status:

  • Hourly/Non-Exempt
