Function / Position Summary
To provide direction to the Specialized Student Services Program as it aligns and supports teaching and learning in School District U-46
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with federal and state mandates to provide a full continuum of services for Special Education students; interpret state and federal rules and regulations to provide training to keep district staff aware of current guidelines and certified.
- Assist with the procurement of funding for Special Education programs by complying with state and federal rules and regulations.
- Assist with the supervision and evaluation of Special Education programs and administrators.
- Coordinator and develop department newsletter to distribute quarterly district-wide.
- Ensure proper implementation of Special Education programs by screening, training, and motivating an effective staff.
- Plan, initiate, direct, and evaluate curricula and transitions programs to guarantee a quality education for all special education students from 3 to 22 years of age; oversee extended school year services, guaranteeing appropriate staffing, program content, and resources; support the technical needs of students (Assistive Technology) and the program; assist with the development of MTSS district-wide.
- Plan and implement a program of formal and informal staff appraisals to assist staff in reaching their professional goals and to increase the quality of instruction.
- Participate in IEP/Special Education meetings to ensure that each student is provided and receives an appropriate Individualized Education Plan which best meets the identified student needs.
- Support the appropriate special education services to students by assuring the evaluative and diagnostic services and placements meet the identified student needs.
- Support maximum integration of special education students into general education by working in tandem with general education programs.
- Support proper implementation of special education programs by screening, training, and motivating an effective staff.
- Align and support Specialized Student Services programs to meet district improvement goals and expectations.
- Lead and participate in various committees to facilitate and support district-wide and program initiatives to engage all stakeholders in the program; discipline committee; co-chair Citizen Advisory Council Committee.
- Assist with the management and monitoring of state indicators and complaint resolution procedures involving: ISBE complaints, OCR complaints, mediation procedurals, and due process proceedings.
- Serve as the department liaison for major discipline incidents involving special education and 504 students.
- Collaborate with building administrators on the development of 504 Plans.
- Conduct professional development to various groups regarding 504 Plans.
- Oversee Para Interventionists (PIT) and monitor building referrals for PIT assistance.
