Duties

Position:                              EL Teacher

Reports To:                         Principal
                                             Director of Special Education                   

OBJECTIVES
To provide academic support to students who are English Language Learners to help them transition to speaking, reading and writing the English language
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct assessments and identify students for the Program.
  2. Develop program curriculum.
  3. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  4. Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of English Language Learner students.  
  5. Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the students make a satisfactory transition to a regular classroom.
  6. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve effective participation in all activities.
  7. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records.
  8. Communicates with parents through a variety of means.  Holds parent conferences to discuss the individual student’s progress and interprets the school program.
  9. Communicates with classroom teachers regarding the Program and student information.
  10. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  11. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  12. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger handle, or feel: reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move from 10 to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
  • Bilingual Education endorsement or ESL endorsement
