Duties
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in special education teaching and administration.
- Appropriate State of Illinois license for both administrative and special education duties.
- Outstanding communications skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as an Assistant Director or Director in the field of special education
Accountable to:
Primary Objective:
The Director of Student Services is responsible for
- Providing leadership and working with administrators and teachers in the planning and development of the special programming for students.
Major Areas of Accountability*:
- Assist teachers in observing, identifying and appropriately referring children with special needs.
- Screen and, when appropriate, process special education referrals.
- Continually evaluate district referral system to keep pace with any changes in rules and regulations and to best serve the needs of District 159 students.
- Oversee the district and state assessment systems of new and current special needs students.
- Review records of all new special education students to the district and facilitate placement in appropriate programs.
- Oversees staffings relative to the initial placement, review or termination of a student’s program.
- Assume responsibility for appropriate placements in specialized instruction programs and coordinate all necessary activities, as needed.
- Examine, evaluate and recommend to Assistant Superintendent of Instruction new instructional materials for special classes.
- Provide information, support and counseling to parents, teachers, and students when appropriate.
- Coordinate activities and services for all special education personnel, including but not limited to speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, LBS 1 teachers, social workers and psychologists.
- Prepare, submit, administer and amend (as needed) various grant programs including IDEA Flow-through, IDEA Pre-school flow-throw, and Harrisburg iePoint.
- Work collaboratively with the district’s interventionists and Assistant Superintendent of Instruction with regard to the implementation of Response to Intervention.
- Oversees the compliance and management of all student records. In addition, manages all necessary records of students evaluated.
- Knowledgeable of all specialized instruction programs and personnel in the assigned programs and offer assistance as needed.
- Serve as contact person between the District and the Lincoln-Way Special Education Coop, of which District 159 is a member.
- Verify services provided and appropriate billing for special education services through the Coop.
- Attend workshops, seminars and conferences dealing with special education issues and concerns.
- Coordinate the formation and implementation of Section 504 plans that fall under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Coordinate summative and formative evaluations for a portion of the special education staff.
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, and other informational data required or appropriate to the district’s special education program.
- Stay abreast of federal, state and local special education rules and regulations, and make sure Mokena School District remains in full compliance with same.
- Perform such other duties as may be requested by the Superintendent or building administration to assist in the smooth operation and efficient delivery of educational services.

Requirements:
- Bending, carrying, climbing, lifting, pushing-pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to occasionally lift, move, or push items of 30 lbs.
