Duties

School social workers enhance the academic mission of the district.  Social workers assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with or create barriers to the educational process. The school social worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by advancing the emotional and social development of the students. 

Qualifications

Current State of Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Social Worker endorsement

Master’s in Social Work from an accredited university or college

Knowledge of Illinois and federal special education rules and regulations

Salary/Benefits

per negotiated contract with the Sullivan Education Association

Additional Notes

  1. Works with students in individual or small group settings to promote positive skill development for optimal success in the school setting. 
  2. Determines and implements appropriate therapeutic strategies to effect changes in behavioral –social interactions of students and their families.
  3. Serves as a liaison between families and the school to promote optimal educational growth and development.
  4. Collaborates with school staff and other school personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning.
  5. Participate as members of the IEP, MTSS problem solving, and various other committees that develop and promote students’ academic and behavioral success.
  6. Identifies and reports to the Department of Children and Family Services suspected cases of abuse and neglect as well as working with other stakeholders or agencies involved.
  7. Provides social work case management for students and families.
  8. Consults with staff on behavioral-emotional-environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process.
  9. Conducts classroom lessons, psycho-educational social skills groups, and classroom presentations on identified areas of concern for the students.
  10. Maintains required records per IEP regulations and submits appropriate documents and reports for special education evaluations. 
  11. Conducts home visits related to establishing communication and positive connections between the families and school setting around identified issues.
  12. Serves as liaison with community agencies and assists in fostering communication between schools, parents/guardians, and community leaders.
  13. Locates and mobilizes community resources to support students and families.
  14. Attends meetings and professional development activities as required.
