Duties
Job Focus: To use instructional leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to align the school’s activities and staff function to the district’s mission while promoting the educational development of each student and the efficient operation of the school program.
Performance Responsibilities:
Instructional Leadership
- Assumes responsibility and instructional leadership for the planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the educational program.
- Provides overall instructional leadership for improvement of the student learning/educational program in the building, assesses curricular needs and makes recommendations for necessary changes in the instructional program. The majority of the principal’s time should be spent on this responsibility.
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates the instructional program of the school, observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials that are consistent with research on learning and child growth and development.
- Provides leadership and oversight of the co-curricular and extra-curricular programs.
- Works with teachers and parents to implement student interventions that differentiate instruction based on student need.
- Facilities the assessment program with the Student Services Coordinator and Director of Curriculum and Instruction (i.e. IAR, ACESS 2.0, I-Ready, etc.).
- Partners with teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and individual teacher performance.
- Uses data to make decisions about curriculum, assessment, instruction and all school improvement efforts.
- Coordinates and promotes professional growth plans and opportunities for faculty and staff (i.e. PLC’s, Grade Level Meetings, School Improvement Days, School Leadership Team, Institute Days, etc.).
- Participate on various school and district committees (i.e. Safety/Crisis, Concussion Oversight Team, PERA, Teacher Evaluation, Curriculum, PTAC, Wellness, BPAC, Scholarship etc.)
- Partners with the Student Services Coordinator on the implementation of the MTTS process, attending IEP meeting and coordinating related student services matters.
- Implements district-wide curriculum.
- Works collaboratively Director of Curriculum and Instruction on curriculum development and implementation.
- Conducts staff meetings on curriculum and instruction.
- Directs the development and implementation of school improvement plans within the building.
- Attends school functions, as appropriate.
- Analyzes student data and uses that analysis to improve student learning.
- Ensures each teacher is following the district curriculum.
- Establishes appropriate expectations for teachers and engages in direct supervision to ensure that those expectations are being met.
- Establishes and communicates high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
- Coordinates New Teacher Induction and ongoing staff development program
- Establishes a professional development plan for school level administrators with on-going dialogue, reflection, and evaluation
- Establishes, monitors, and evaluates school improvement goals as documented in the annual School Improvement Plan
- Oversees the leadership of a continuous improvement process within a Pre-K through 8th grade setting including RtI and PBIS and leadership of the master schedule process to provide enhanced learning outcomes for students.
- Develops, monitors, and evaluates programs to enhance positive school culture and climate
Personnel Administration
- Keeps staff informed and seeks ideas for the improvement of the school.
- Assists with the interviewing and selection of personnel; orients new employees to the building and to the schedule of services available.
- Conducts staff meetings on district procedures.
- Promotes harmonious staff relationships within the building.
- Meet on an ongoing basis with the Collective Bargaining Units (HEA and HSSA) Executive Officers.
- Observes, confers with, and evaluates employees under the principal’s supervision, according to the provisions of Board policy, contracts, and the School Code.
- Provides opportunities for effective professional development that address the needs of the instructional program and the needs of the staff.
- Employs methods which foster a collaborative environment conducive to openness and cooperation and which invites participation in the decision-making process when appropriate.
- Establishes a culture of mutual respect and excellence through dialogue and relationships with staff, students, central office administrators, and community members.
Management
- Develops Building Master Schedule and Staff Supervision Schedule
- Engages in ongoing conversations with the Director of Building and Grounds regarding the operations and maintenance of the school.
- Interprets Board of Education policies and procedures.
- Maintains student handbook and building procedures.
- Coordinates selection of all certified and classified staff.
- Coordinates building level crisis plans and safety drills.
- Inspects the buildings, grounds and equipment for health and safety factors.
- Requests maintenance work to be done in and around the building.
School-Community Relations
- Communicates and informs students, teachers, parents and community members using a variety of mediums including technology.
- Organizes and maintains a public relations system for the school that consistently celebrates and informs parents and the community of the accomplishments of student, staff, and school.
- Responds to concerns of staff, parents, and community regarding the educational program.
- Communicates regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the students in the school.
- Works with School PTO and other parent organizations.
- Partners with the Village of Hillside to support school/community events and activities.
- Establishes a culture of mutual respect and excellence through dialogue and relationships with staff, students, central office administrators, and community members.
- Coordinates the implementation of the parent-teacher conference schedule.
Develops positive relationships with outside community agencies.
Business Administration
- Prepares and submits annual school budget requests to the district office.
- Supervises school financial accounting in accordance with procedures of the Superintendent’s office.
- Keeps inventories of all instructional materials and equipment.
- Requisitions materials and services.
- Certifies receipt of goods and services and approves invoices for payment.
- Monitor and approve staff absences utilizing the AESOP system.
Student Personnel Services
- Determines eligibility of students for attendance and classification within school boundaries and building.
- Supervises the guidance program, where appropriate.
- Responsible for student management, attendance and discipline,
- Supervises school activities and events after regular school hours.
- Considers student welfare in carrying out duties of principalship.
- Follows and implements all laws and procedures related to the safety, security and welfare of students, staff, and facilities.
Other
- Works collegially and effectively with other members of the administrative team.
- Completes in a timely manner all records and reports required by law and regulation or requested by the Superintendent.
- Continues to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences.
- Performs any duties that are within the scope of employment and certification, as assigned by the Superintendent.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000 Based upon Experience and Credentials
