Duties

Nexus - Indian Oaks Family Healing is part of Nexus Family Healing, a national nonprofit network of mental health agencies with over 45 years of restoring hope for thousands of children and families through outpatient/community mental health services, foster care and adoption, and residential treatment. Safe Harbor School is our very own private school. Safe Harbor School is the on-campus, non-public school that serves youth receiving treatment at Nexus- Indian Oaks. Safe Harbor School serve grade level 6 - 12, and students participate in a curriculum that is tailored to their unique needs and current grade level. The school provides a special education curriculum that is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement and approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. Credits transfer to any school upon the client’s discharge.

Nexus- Indian Oaks Family Healing is looking for a skilled special education teacher to join our Safe Harbor School. In this position you will have the opportunity to assist our youth and help them navigate through their treatment plans and individual IEP's.

Expected Responsibilities:

  • In cooperation with other members of the school team, assess educational needs and the progress of assigned students
  • Provide instruction to assigned students in classes of expertise as assigned.
  • Provide crisis intervention within the classroom setting and apply TCI or approved de-escalation techniques appropriate to the situation at hand; ask for assistance when warranted through appropriate procedures and keep other academic and clinical treatment staff appraised of inappropriate behaviors.
  • Create a classroom climate that is positive and supportive for both learning and treatment.
  • Ensure confidentiality regarding students is in compliance with all licensing agencies, company policy, COA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Develop or assist in developing IEPs, test ability levels and coordinate meetings with other members of the IEP team where appropriate.
  • Attend faculty/staff meetings, IEP staffing's and participate in additional meetings and training sessions as required; understand and support the Nexus treatment philosophy and modalities.

Qualifications

Education, Credentials and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an educational discipline is required.
  • Active teacher’s licensure/certification required
  • 2 years previous teaching experience preferred.
  • LBS1 Licensure preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required. Must meet state regulating agency and Corporate driving requirements. 

Physical Demands:

  •  Must be able to assist staff in physical and non-physical interventions with residents.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100+ pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (2-4 hours).
  • Must be able to twist, bend and stretch in a manner conducive to the execution of daily activities within a school.

Salary/Benefits

Compensation: Salary Range is listed $49,896.00 to $58,701.50 per year based on experience level.
