Duties
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Assists the Executive Director of Special Education in managing the operation of special education services and functions as an integral part of the Education Team.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interview, recommend and evaluate Special Education Administrators and Supervisory personnel.
- Provides leadership to the staff in special education, 504 Compliance, and Response to Intervention.

- Develops and administers educational programs and policies for the school district which provides for the education of children receiving special education or gifted education in conformance to state and federal regulations and policies of the district.
- Assists the Executive Director of Special Education in the preparation of the department’s budget related to areas of responsibility.
- Incorporates an ongoing monitoring and analysis system for baseline data.
- Establishes desirable school-community relations through:
- Contacts with parents and other lay people.
- Active participation in organized community agencies.
- Attendance at meetings, conferences, and exhibits.
- Preparation of materials of explanation and interpretation of the program.
- Assists the Executive Director of Special Education with the coordination of the writing and evaluation of special grants and state and federally funded programs in the area of responsibility.
- Assists the Executive Director of Special Education with the coordination of the budget and subsequent claims in the area of special grants in state and federally funded programs.
- Assists in the coordination of special education transportation.
- Is responsible for the appropriate operation of special education programs housed in community not for profit service agencies and government-operated facilities.
- Is responsible for the appropriate delivery of required special education services for district students attending out of area residential schools.
- In conjunction with the Executive Director of Special Education, monitors and corrects areas of district non-compliance with state and federal regulations in the areas of assigned responsibility.
- Monitors and manages complaints of non-compliance and any resulting due process proceedings.
- Aggressively pursues opportunities to increase outside revenue to the district through grants, improved reporting and other sources.
- Maintains effective communication with parents, teachers, principals and community service agencies so as to determine areas in need of attention in the assigned areas of responsibility.
- Maintains an active communications flow with area university special education teacher preparation faculty in order to recruit scarce special education staff to the district and assist the university in responding to local teacher preparation needs.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree and certification in accordance with the School Code of the State of Illinois for Special Education Administration.
