Duties
VACANCY: Valley View Community Unit School District 365U is seeking a Health Services Administrator for the 2022-2023 school year.
JOB SUMMARY: Performs functions to administer school health services including continued maintenance of health services policies for students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Communicates school health and safety priorities to District Administration, Building Principals, staff, families, and students. Strengthens and implements school health policies and practices that align with best practices and federal/state regulations. Assists and supervises school nurses and other personnel in health related activities. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, District/State Board of Education policies and procedures and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and maintains a coordinated school health program including but not limited to standardizing plans of care, parent correspondence, and professional nursing care.
- Serves as a resource for nurses and administrators regarding school health and wellness policies and procedures.
- Maintains an accident/injury prevention procedure to facilitate school safety.
- Assesses the health and safety needs of the school environment in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, implementing the Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan and other protocols and interventions as indicated.
- Establishes and maintains communicable disease prevention and control programs in cooperation with local and state public health agencies and keeps abreast of new medical and nursing developments.
- Leads management of school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
- Guides nurses in special education functions such as IEP development and standardized IEP reporting.
- Assists in the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of school nursing personnel
- Develops health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practices.
- Participates as a member of curriculum committees as a resource and specialist in health issues.
- Provides staff inservice programs on health topics including pandemic response, bloodborne pathogens and the district exposure control plan, emergency medical plans, and first aid, CPR and AED training as needed.
- Supervises and provides health related classroom instruction.
- Provides inservice activities designed for school nurses and health assistants.
- Provides professional development for nurses regarding policies for direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Provides health information for district staff, nursing staff, and community as needed.
- Supervises and/or provides screening and follow up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical deficits.
- Provides professional development to nursing staff regarding annual reporting of hearing and vision, immunization summary and dental summary.
- Serves on various team committees such as crisis team, health and safety, wellness team, and curriculum teams.
- Maintains a user friendly and organized health services office conducive to confidential communication and services.
- Organizes the purchase of health and OSHA supplies and equipment as indicated for the health office and school.
- Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.
- Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies, including the Will County Health Department, and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Mentors and evaluates nurses participating as members of multidisciplinary teams in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs.
- Recommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a health deficit.
- Retains membership in professional school nursing and education organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
- Contributes in district committees and association activities.
- Leads participation as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
- Illinois Professional Educator with School Support Personnel Endorsement for School Nursing (Required)
- Baccalaureate Degree in nursing from an accredited college or university
- License to practice professional nursing in the State of Illinois
- First Aid and CPR Certifications
- Illinois Certification as a Vision and Hearing Screening technician
EXPERIENCE
- Three years of nursing experience preferred
- Experience developing care plans for students with medical needs
- Proven excellent communication skills with students, teachers, parents, and administration
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of impact of medical issues on educational settings
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records required by law
- Knowledge of current medical issues and practice, and willingness to stay current and communicate changes in a timely fashion
- Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology
- Completion of the required ISBE training for evaluators (or willingness to obtain in first two months of employment)
Salary/Benefits
The work year for this position is 12 months. Salary for this position is regionally competitive and commensurate with experience. FLSA Exempt.
