Duties
JOB GOAL: To assist the teacher with classroom and student needs that will allow students to benefit from program goals and objectives.
CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tools as the teacher recommends for individual students.
- Work with individual students or small/large groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing concepts, or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interest and abilities.
- Construct classroom materials and/or worksheets related to academic areas.
- Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
- Help students’ master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
- Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assist with the supervision of students in all school directed activities.
- The Paraprofessional will display positive communication skills to enhance good classroom relationships with students and teacher.
- Keep bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date, when applicable.
- Assist with such small/large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling.
- Develop communication skills with students.
- Assist students in the library or media center, when applicable.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher.
- Check and records student attendance.
- Collect and record collection of money.
- Help students with their clothing, when applicable.
- Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
- Assist with wash-up and toilet routines, when applicable.
- Alert teacher to special information about an individual student, pertaining to the school program.
- Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.
- Lifting and transferring of students as needed/necessary.
- Assist in implementing Behavior Intervention Plans under the supervision of the teacher.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
- Participate in required meetings and inservice training programs, as assigned.
- Communicate with appropriate school personnel on needs of students.
- Develop his/her own professional growth through reading, workshops, inservices, conferences, and/or advanced coursework.
- Perform other duties, as necessary, to provide Paraprofessional services as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
Qualifications
ELS(PARA) license in the state of Illinois
