  1. Provide individual guidance counseling to students; confer as needed with parents, teachers and others regarding student needs.
  2. Helps students with academic, personal, social, and emotional problems and/or makes referrals when and where appropriate and necessary.
  3. Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
  4. Refer students to social services and governmental agencies, support groups and other community resources as appropriate.
  5. Make appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  6. Communicate with District personnel, school staff, parents, students and public agencies regarding student placement, referrals and related issues.
  7. Provide teachers with appropriate student personal information including academic and credit standing.
  8. Make occupational and college information available to students and parents.
  9. Maintain current knowledge of community resources and recent trends in counseling techniques.
  10. Serve as liaison to other agencies and community organizations.
  11. Review records, recommend placements and orientate new students.
  12. Serve as the testing coordinator for all standardized testing and dual credit enrollment testing.
  13. Responsible for familiarizing students with the content of the SAT/ACT and assisting them in registering for the SAT/ACT.
  14. Help plan and participate in parent nights, college nights, and career oriented field trips as appropriate to grade level.
  15. Prepare and deliver oral presentations.
  16. Provides information about individual students to colleges and potential employers. Specifically, the counselor will assist students in completing college applications and write letters of recommendation for scholarships, etc.
  17. Advertise scholarship opportunities.
  18. Reviews and assists students in updating their Four-Year Program Plan.  The counselor will review credit requirements met and course prerequisites fulfilled for each student enrolled in the school. Credit check letters are mailed to all returning students each summer.
  19. Develop the high school master schedule with assistance from the building principal.
  20. Register students and aide students in course and subject selection annually.
  21. Develop and review the high school Course Handbook annually.  
  22. Participate as a member of the school’s Intervention Team  and RtI Team.
  23. Participate in faculty committees and meetings.
  24. Present a professional image to the community.
  25. Maintain professional competence through in-service activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional activities.
  26. Adapt to changes in assignment, programs and materials.
  27. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Master’s Degree in Counseling or Social Work
Illinois Professional Educator Licensure Preferred


Salary and work year will be determined per the Staunton CUSD #6 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
