Duties

The primary responsibility of the PE teacher is to develop lessons plans and deliver engaging health instruction, differentiated instruction that is aligned with the curriculum, and provide appropriate assessments.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts of PE, health, safety, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning. Job Summary:    Plan and execute P.E. education instruction including, but not limited to the following broad areas:   1.  Promotion of health and disease prevention concepts and health-enhancing behaviors; effects of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; and biological, social, cultural and psychological aspects of human sexuality and family life. 2.  Provide differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs of your students, and organize/administer physical fitness testing, at least twice per school year. 3.  Plan and execute physical education instruction including, but not limited to movement concepts and skills for lifelong physical activities. 4.  Provide adaptive PE related activities and instruction for students with IEP's or Section 504 Plans, as appropriate.    5.  The PE teacher collaborates with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators in addressing a variety of instructional issues.   5.  Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, rhythms and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing IAHPERD recommendations as well as State Board of Education recommendations/requirements/goals and on SHAPE America and NASPE National Standards/Goals. 6.  Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms and fundamentals of body movement. 7.  Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible. 8.  Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of pupils. 9.  Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property. 10.  Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills, fitness, knowledge, and contribution in team sport. 11.  Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. 12.  Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines. 13.  Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records. 14. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress. 15. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. 16. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day. 17. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs. 18. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities. 19. Is a member of the school Concussion Oversight Team. 20. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 21. The P.E. teacher communicates with students; parents/guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress.   The P.E teacher is responsible for creating an environment of respect and rapport, and establishing a culture for learning in which safety and order is the norm. District 155 expects teacher candidates to be child-centered professionals with a high degree of energy, flexibility, and initiative. Expectations are that teachers also are good communicators, have well-developed interpersonal skills, practice reflective teaching, and seek continuous self-improvement.

Qualifications

Current and valid license or appropriate endorsement.
