Duties

Organizational Management: 

  1. Coordinate maintenance records that are necessary for documenting progress of  each child, results of tests, health records, etc. including maintenance of student records deemed temporary and permanent. 
  2. Prepare all reports required by local, state and federal offices. 
  3. Monitor the distribution of information that goes out to students and families.
  4. Monitor attendance records of students, as well as certified and non-certificated staff. 
  5. Implement policies, rules and regulations of the district at the elementary level.  
  6. Implement the negotiated contract between the district and teachers. 
  7. Create elementary master and paraprofessional schedules.
  8. Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending meetings, reading  professional journals and other publications.

Communications Management: 

  1. Communicate with the staff through staff meetings, handbooks and other written or verbal  communication to clarify instructions, consider mutual problems, interpret/implement policies and procedures, understand rules concerning the use of the school’s facilities, lunch hour duties, playground supervision, marking report cards and other records, understand emergency response plans, understand health practices, patrol, etc.
  2. Advise the Superintendent of the needs of the school, number of teachers required, materials, and textbooks, etc. 
  3. Cooperate with parent-teacher associations and parent groups. 
  4. Confer with parents as the need arises concerning the progress or difficulties of their children. 
  5. Send communications to parents as needed. 
  6. Develop a program of public relations in order to further the community’s understanding and support of the educational program. . 
  7. Give direction in the discussion and resolution of (1) individual student problems; (2)  individual teacher problems; and (3) teacher-student problems. 
  8. Cooperate with parents or parent groups to interpret and more fully inform them as to district policies and procedures. 

Personnel Management: 

  1. Supervise all personnel and the operation of the school in order that its maximum efficiency  may be maintained. 
  2. Conduct interviews and recommend employment for prospective applicants for vacancies. 
  3. Make recommendations to the administration regarding collective bargaining negotiations.
  4. Orient new employees to building routines and procedures. 
  5. Process leave of absence requests. 
  6. Perform evaluations of certified and non-certified staff pursuant to the district evaluation  plans. 
  7. Recommend to the Superintendent and school board non-renewal, remediation and/or  dismissal of certified and non-certified staff. 
  8. Recommend to the Superintendent and school board disciplinary actions regarding certified and non-certified staff. 
  9. Conduct staff meetings to keep staff informed of policy changes, new programs, etc.  
  10. Assist substitute teachers and substitute paraprofessionals to provide the most effective programs possible. 

Student Management: 

  1. Assist with the registration of all children and assign them to classes. 
  2. Establish guidelines for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline in  coordination with the district policy and procedures for student discipline.  
  3. Confer with parents as the need arises concerning the progress or difficulties of their  children.
  4. Responsible for Elementary Summer School Coordination and Supervision (4 weeks in the summer from 8AM-noon).  
  5. Provide approval for all elementary field trips. 

 

Instructional Management: 

  1. Be the instructional leader of the building by implementing the state standards and school improvement plan as well as best practices to maintain positive status with the ISBE. 
  2. Visit classrooms regularly. 
  3. Conduct evaluations of certified staff. 
  4. Facilitate professional development and training of the staff to ensure effective instruction.
  5. Maintain building level committees to improve instruction and ensure use of best practices. 
  6. Review student data and adjust instructional methods and contents accordingly to meet  academic standards.

Services Management: 

  1. File a report of all serious accidents with the Superintendent.  
  2. Work in collaboration with the school nurse to understand and follow district policy and Illinois law when excluding students from school due to a chronic  or communicable infectious disease. 
  3. Consult with the nurse on matters of health. 
  4. Enforce all provisions in the Illinois Compiled Statutes referring to health. 
  5. Supervise auxiliary services that are directly related to elementary students such as cafeteria, transportation, maintenance, etc. 

Properties Management: 

  1. Be responsible for the building whenever it is in use including implementing district wide policy and procedures as well as building level rules that are not inconsistent with the Board  Policy or Administrative Procedures. 
  2. Grant the use of the school building and grounds according to the policies and procedures  adopted by the Board of Education. 
  3. When situations arise, not covered by established policies, refer the problem to the  Superintendent. 
  4. Supervise and enforce federal lunch guidelines. 
  5. Facilitate emergency drills as required by the Illinois School Code, Board Policy and  Administrative Procedures. 
  6. Implement Board Policy and Administrative Procedure regarding sex offender use of school  property. 
  7. Provide a safe building for students and staff. 
  8. Comply with Life/Safety requirements. 

District Wide Obligations: 

  1. Serve on district committees. 
  2. Participate in district wide principal meetings and other meetings as required or appropriate. 
  3. Work with other principals to create the District Handbook and other necessary District manuals and documents each year. 
  4. Attend BOE meetings when possible. Submit board reports each month. 

Special Education/504 Responsibilities: 

  1. Work in coordination with the special education team to ensure appropriate and timely special education services including  but not limited to referrals, testing, IEP meetings, and provision of services. 
  2. Notify the Director of Special Education or his/her designee of any concerns regarding  services provided to the students. 
  3. Serve as LEA for IEP meetings when the special education supervisor is not available.
  4. Serve as 504 coordinator for all 504 evaluations and meetings. 

Financial/Business Management: 

  1. Works with Business Manager to prepare budget requisitions and compile them for approval by the Board and maintain  adequate inventory records. 
  2. Supervise the custody of all monies collected for elementary purposes.

Qualifications

Professional Educator License with Principal or General Administrative endorsement.

Salary/Benefits

Salary to be determined by the Board of Education (range $90,000-$95,000); competitive to area schools. Health, Dental & Vision Insurance plus Flexible Spending Account. Sick and Personal time off. District paid TRS creditable earnings.

Terms of Employment: 11 Month Employee, Flexible Summers  

Additional Notes

Basic Function:  To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student. A majority of the time spent by the principal shall be spent on curriculum and staff development through both formal and informal activities, establishing clear lines of communication regarding school goals, accomplishments, practices and policies with parents and teachers.
