  • Maintain confidentiality including records.
  • Counsel students who may be teacher, parent, or self-referred.
  • Serve as a resource person consulting with teachers, parents, and staff regarding meeting the needs of the students.
  • Provide consultation with teachers, administrators, school psychologists, school social workers, outside agencies and social services concerning the welfare of the students.
  • Maintain accurate records for student serviced through the counseling program.
  • Communicate the function of the counseling program to the community.
  • Refer students to problems and their parents to special programs, specialists, and community resources.
  • Address immediate student concerns.
  • Serve as a consultant to curriculum development pertinent to guidance activities.
  • Serve as coordinator of the district K-12 Student Assistance Program.
  • Guarantee protection of the constitutional and statutory rights of students.
  • Reduces exposure to TORT situations involving legal and proper student testing, evaluation, identification and placement of SPED students.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.


High School Counselor Job Description also includes:

  • Aide students in course and subject selection related to their individual educational plan and career interests.
  • Supervise the preparation and processing of academic transcripts and scholarships for colleges, as well as employment applications.
  • Progress towards meeting graduation credit requirements by all students is monitored on a regular basis and communicated to parents in a timely manner.
  • Participates in the development of the master schedule by providing input to the principal.
  • Actively promotes scholarship and personal development opportunities by providing information to parents and students.
  • Facilitates the dissemination of career and college information to students and their parents.


Certification required by the State of Illinois and set forth in The School Code of Illinois
