Duties

Hammitt Schools serve students, grades K-12, with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities and/or autism. The Teacher Therapist is the lead classroom teacher, responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the assigned classroom program. Additionally, the teacher therapist provides classroom leadership and works in cooperation with assigned classroom staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Educational Instruction: Plans, coordinates, evaluates, and implements a comprehensive curriculum which meets the individualized behavioral, academic and social needs of each student enrolled in the classroom and which is directly related to each child’s Individualized Educational Plan. Assesses student performance levels (behavioral and academic) and recommends appropriate goals and objectives in the IEP staffing process.
  2. Behavioral Treatment: Implements the clinical behavioral treatment program according to guidelines, including individualized programming and crisis intervention.
  3. Social Skills Training: Implements social skills training and integrates social skills curriculum throughout the day.
  4. Interdisciplinary Team Structure: Works with the teacher therapist assistant in a team teaching capacity, providing classroom leadership and working in cooperation with him/her. Cooperates with the administrative/supervisory and support staff in planning for and scheduling programming and/or services for the students and/or their families. Attends meetings as assigned.
  5. Progress Reporting: Collects, prepares and presents behavioral and academic data on each child in the classroom. Maintains behavioral data and applies statistical analysis as required by program standards to measure student progress.
  6. Lesson Plans: Develops and implements lesson plans that reflect best practice in specialized educational instruction.
  7. Professional Development: Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in the area of special education and provide expertise in long range planning for the Hammitt School program.
  8. Materials and Supplies: Inventories and orders supplies according to guidelines and within the classroom budget.
  9. Supervise University Students: Supervises and evaluates university special education students, junior practicum students and/or expressive therapists.
  10. Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement activities and in the School Improvement Planning process.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of special education and/or secondary education, specializing in teaching children with one or more of the following: behavior disabilities, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, autism spectrum, speech and language deficits and/or developmental disabilities. LBS-1 licensure with the State of Illinois in Special Education in one or more of the above-mentioned disabilities.
