Automotive Technology Teacher School Year 2026-2027

Duties

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach a sequence of Auto 1–6 courses, ranging from introductory automotive systems to advanced diagnostics and repair.
  • Deliver engaging, safety-focused, and industry-relevant instruction following state and district standards.
  • Design and maintain a hands-on learning environment, including lab/shop organization, equipment upkeep, and tool management.
  • Integrate STEM and career/technical education (CTE) principles into lessons.
  • Instruct students in areas such as:
    • Vehicle maintenance and repair
    • Engine performance and diagnostics
    • Electrical systems and wiring
    • Braking, suspension, and steering
    • Automotive computer systems and emissions
    • Workplace safety and employability skills
  • Foster career awareness, emphasizing ASE certification pathways, trade school opportunities, and dual credit partnerships.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and industry partners to enhance the program’s alignment with current technologies and workforce demands.
  • Promote student participation in SkillsUSA or related technical competitions.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and inventory.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and community stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate CTE endorsement in Automotive Technology (or ability to obtain).
  • Demonstrated automotive service experience or certification.
  • Strong understanding of automotive technology and safety procedures.

Preferred:

  • ASE certification(s) and/or relevant postsecondary training.
  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Experience managing a high school auto shop or CTE lab.
  • Willingness to support co-curricular and community engagement opportunities.
