Duties

School social workers enhance the academic mission of the district.  Social workers assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with or create barriers to the educational process. The school social worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by advancing the emotional and social development of the students. 

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Master’s degree in Social Work or a related field from an accredited institution. 
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Social Worker Endorsement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of evidence-based social work practice, social-emotional learning, trauma-informed care, and state and federal educational law.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Additional Notes

  1. Provide Tier 2 interventions such as small group counseling, social skills training, and behavior support plans for at-risk students.
  2. Deliver Tier 3 interventions, including individualized support services, case management, and crisis response for students with significant social-emotional or behavioral needs.
  3. Deliver Tier 1 universal classroom instruction on topics aligned with Erin’s Law (child sexual abuse prevention) and Faith’s Law (educator misconduct awareness), using developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed curricula that comply with Illinois mandates and district policies.
  4. Facilitate evidence-based social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons in classrooms to promote self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, responsible decision-making, and positive peer relationships. Botvin Life Skills or curriculum as mandated by the state. 
  5. Support school-wide conflict resolution through proactive instruction in communication skills, problem-solving, and restorative practices.
  6. Collaborate and conduct case study evaluations including initial and/or re-evaluation by implementing the social developmental study, assessments, and assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) 
  7. Collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to assess students needs, coordinate services, and ensure access to appropriate school and community-based support. 
  8. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams using data driven decision making to assess student needs and design interventions. MTSS Team
  9. Conduct time-on-task, classroom observations, or behavioral evaluations to determine the need for intervention or school based services.  
  10. Develop and implement crisis intervention strategies and provide support during emergencies or traumatic events.
  11.  Document services and maintain accurate records in compliance with local,  state, and federal policies.
  12.  Engage in continuous professional development and uphold ethical standards and competencies as outlined by the CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
  13. Manage and coordinate programs that benefit the students and families of Sullivan Elementary School and Sullivan School District (Mentoring Program and Weekend Food Bag Program).
  14.  Order and maintain an adequate inventory of materials and supplies. 
  15.  See that school district and cooperative policies are observed during all activities.
  16.  All other duties as assigned by district administration.
