Duties
The Special Education Cross Categorical Teacher will be responsible for providing educational support and instruction to students with varying disabilities in a classroom setting. The teacher will be expected to create a safe and inclusive learning environment that meets the individual needs of each student, ensuring they acquire essential life skills to lead independent lives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities, in collaboration with parents, general education teachers, and other special education staff to meet their unique needs.
- Design and deliver instruction that is differentiated and aligned with state and national academic standards, while also addressing the unique needs of each student.
- Teach essential life skills, such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping, to enable students to live independently.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and materials to promote student engagement and learning, such as hands-on activities, technology, and small-group instruction.
- Assess student progress regularly and adjust instruction as needed, using data to inform decision-making.
- Communicate regularly with parents and other stakeholders about student progress and any concerns, and collaborate with other professionals to provide appropriate supports and services.
- Foster a positive classroom climate that promotes respect, self-esteem, and independence among students with disabilities.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, including progress reports, IEPs, and other required paperwork.
- Attend and participate in meetings and professional development opportunities, both within the school and the broader community, to stay current on best practices and trends in special education.

The Special Education Cross Categorical Teacher will work in a school environment, usually within a special education classroom. The job may involve standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, as well as the occasional lifting of materials and equipment. The teacher may work with students with challenging behaviors or medical conditions that require special attention and care.
