Duties

The employee must perform this job successfully and the individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability need for the position.

 The employee will work harmoniously with others and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents, staff, and the general public.

  • The employee will understand and follow oral and written instructions with limited supervision.
  • The employee will work on school grounds and fields with a minimum of supervision
  • The employee will have knowledge of the operation of power equipment such as large and small mowers, light trucks, sprayers, hedge shears, and provide maintenance of same.
  • The employee will have knowledge to establish and maintain the turf of lawns and athletic fields and to landscape.
  • The employee will have knowledge of the application, storage, and safe use of all fertilizers and non-restricted pesticides.
  • The employee will be familiar with handling and disposal of hazardous materials, safety requirements for working around asbestos and electrical equipment, and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • The employee will have knowledge of irrigation systems and repairs.
  • The employee will have knowledge of security systems (electronic and key locks).
  • The employee will perform physical requirements that may include:
    • moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
    • frequent and prolonged standing, walking and bending.
    • frequent and prolonged use of extremities overhead.
    • exposure to chemicals, dirt, chalk, liquid chalk, noise, odors, and the possibility of electrical shock.
    • operating tractors, mowers, dump truck, district vehicles, forklift, power tools, etc.
    • climbing ladders, stretching, bending, and attaining heights for gutter, roof, electrical repairs, etc.
    • possible exposure to bodily fluids when cleaning due to student illness or injury (must inform supervisor).
  • The employee will demonstrate standards of moral character and behavior to serve as an effective role model for students.
  • The employee will care for all lawn areas including athletic fields by watering, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, and spraying as needed.
  • The employee will prepare and mark athletic fields for appropriate activities as prescribed by responsible administrator/supervisor.
  • The employer will care for hedges, shrubs, and trees, including pruning, trimming, and disease and pest control.
  • The employee will plant seeds, bulbs, and annuals as needed and provide care for them throughout their growing season.
  • The employee will respond to any maintenance emergency that arises (i.e. plumbing problems, broken windows, locks, doors, vandalism repairs, etc.) and notify supervisor.
  • The employee will maintain repair of equipment including responsibility for all grounds-related equipment.
  • The employee will maintain the district warehouse supplies.
  • The employee will install fences, lay pipe, dig ditches, move bleachers, and haul rubbish.
  • The employee will assist with snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entryways, and driveways and spread sand or salt to prevent slipping.
  • The employee will maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff.
  • The employee will participate in in-service programs as assigned.
  • The employee will act as a friendly ambassador for the district.
  • The employee will maintain satisfactory attendance, as defined in District policy.
  • The employee will perform such other duties as assigned by the Board, the Administration, and/or the Director of Building and Grounds.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent; grounds/landscaping work experience preferred; statement of good physical condition to perform duties

This current position is a full-time, permanent one.
