Duties

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 
The Elementary School Counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment. In order to coordinate comprehensive counseling program, the Elementary Counselor must work closely with the other staff and administration of Dakota CUSD #201.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
  2. Consult with parents, teacher, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  3. Implement a comprehensive appraisal process by:
  • selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interests tests,
  • visiting with students and interview interested adults, and
  • interpreting results to students, teacher, administrators, and parents.
  1. Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and student files.
  2. Identify students with special needs and make appropriate recommendations and referrals.
  3. Implement an effective program of educational and career planning.
  4. Schedule opportunities for students to visit with resource persons about academic and career choices.
  5. Maintain a current library of career information, and assist students in using the information, and assist students in using the information effectively.
  6. Assist with enrollment and kindergarten round-up.
  7. Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  8. Assist in making recommendations for school curriculum and instructional practices.
  9. Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  10. Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, graduation, and open house.
  11. See that district policies are observed during all activities.
  12. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  13. Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures.
  14. Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  15. Performs casework services with students and families to help resolve student’s behavioral and social problems.
  16. Selects and administers age appropriate assessment methods and materials in order to determine the needs of the student.
  17. Consults with teachers and other school personnel to obtain information regarding the reason for referral.
  18. Gathers background information on the student’s social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records.
  19. Submits comprehensive socio-cultural assessment reports that address the reason for referral and include appropriate recommendations.
  20. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary assessment team assigned to each school and works as a team member in making placement decisions, developing intervention plans, and planning programs to meet the special needs of children.
  21. Communicates case findings and recommendations to teachers and other school personnel as needed.
  22. Participates in eligibility committee meetings and contributes to the development of theIndividualized Education Plan (IEP).
  23. Services as a resource to teachers and staff regarding social work services and the academic/social needs of students.
  24. Conferences with and provides information, support, and counseling to parents/guardians of students.
  25. Conducts specialized individual and group counseling sessions to address specific emotional, social, and behavioral needs of students.
  26. Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, private counseling facilities and community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies.
  27. Provides follow-up support and periodic re-evaluation services as necessary.
  28. Acts as a member of the school crisis team to provide intervention to students as necessary.
  29. Compiles monthly reports and maintains accurate case records.
  30. Assists the Department Supervisor in planning and conducting bi-monthly department staff meetings.
  31. Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  2. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  3. Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
  4. Requires some travel.
  5. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

 EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  1. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
  2. Two years accredited teaching experience.
  3. Current Illinois State Teaching Certificate on file in the District Office.
  4. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office.
  5. Desire to continue career improvement.
