BASIC FUNCTION: The Principal is responsible for the supervision of personnel and the day-to-day operations of Hammitt School. Demonstrates an ability to apply trauma-informed principles and integrates them into daily practice. Communicates effectively and promotes collaborative problem solving by demonstrating care and respect in considering the diverse experiences and perspectives of others.




  1. Program Management: Provides leadership in the development and implementation of the Hammitt Schools program; develops and revises procedures as needed; serves as liaison with referral and funding sources; compiles outcome measures for Hammitt Schools; coordinates and collaborates with other agency program areas; ensures compliance with relevant standards developed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Illinois Department of Human Services.


  1. Personnel Management: Employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff within Hammitt School to ensure that The Baby Fold’s standards are met for delivery of services to clients. Provides support and performance feedback, including timely completion performance evaluations.


  1. Fiscal Management: Develops and administers the annual budget for their designated school. Ensures that all expenditures related to Hammitt School are within the approved budget for the program.


  1. Legal Responsibilities: Responsible for the design, implementation and management of programs with informed regard for the rights of the children, parents/guardians, and staff members under the school Ensures that the school program/operation(s) are in compliance with The Baby Fold’s policies, procedures, and rules, all contractual obligations, and all relevant state and federal laws.


  5. Professional Leadership:

  1. Models the agency’s core values of respect, integrity, teamwork, excellence, stewardship and diversity in all activities and interactions.
  2. Provides strategic input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the organization.
  3. Represents The Baby Fold in business contacts with professionals and the public outside the agency.
  4. Initiates and maintains positive relationships with community resources, potential donors, and the community.
  5. Exercises professional leadership by keeping abreast of current trends and developments in field of responsibility.
  6. Provides training to supervisors and employees on topics related to field of knowledge, as needed.


  1. Planning: Actively participates in agency strategic planning and annual planning processes. Leads and/or participates in strategic planning project teams as appropriate.


  1. Quality Improvement: Leads quality improvement efforts within Hammitt School. Provides leadership for agency quality improvement efforts through facilitation, sponsorship, and participation in quality improvement activities.



  1. Licensure within the State of Illinois requirements as a non-public special education school administrator. Minimum of General Administrative or Principal Licensure with Licensure as a Special Education Teacher. Licensure or Endorsement as a Director of Special Education preferred.
  2. A minimum of five years of supervisory experience and at least five years of applied classroom experience.
  3. Knowledge of and skill in applying behavioral approaches to working with adolescents.
  4. Demonstrated competence in effective teaching methods and procedures for use with adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities.
  5. Demonstrated ability to administer the total academic treatment program from within an interdisciplinary team structure.
  6. A demonstrated and consistent history of planning, developing, implementing and improving programs and people to meaningfully, measurably and positively impact departmental results.
  7. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  8. Demonstrated analytical, decision making, and problem solving skills and the demonstrated ability to perform high quality work effectively.
  9. Ability to establish rapport, communicate effectively, maintain consistency and boundaries with and effectively motivate employee and student populations.
  10. Ability and willingness to drive throughout the community for job responsibilities, including a valid Illinois driver’s license that has not been revoked or suspended within the past three years, and use of a personal vehicle with adequate insurance.
  11. Good physical and emotional health, including the physical ability to maintain the safety and well-being of children for whom there is responsibility.
  12. Must pass drug screen and necessary background checks.
  13. Demonstrated competence in serving a culturally diverse population. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
  14. Mission-oriented and willing to apply The Baby Fold’s beliefs and standards to the performance of job duties.
