Duties
You can be part of a special team dedicated to helping children and strengthening the community. Hammitt School is a premier special education facility serving 40 school districts throughout Illinois.
The Speech and Language Therapist provides speech and language therapy and related services to Hammitt Junior-Senior High School students, primarily in the Challenges program, diagnosed on the autism spectrum or with other pervasive developmental diabilities.
WORK HOURS: Full-Time (5 days per week) or Part-Time (2-3 days per week) schedule available
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assessment: Evaluates the speech and language skills of Hammitt School children assigned by the Supervisor of Program Services and develop individualized education program goals and objectives as needed.
- Therapy: Plans lessons and prepare materials to provide individual and/or group therapy, when appropriate, for those children exhibiting problems in the areas of articulation, language, fluency, voice and/or hearing.
- Progress Testing: For each child enrolled in therapy, evaluates progress through formal and informal testing measures.
- Behavior Management: Manages behavior of children in therapy sessions in accordance with individualized behavioral procedures.
- Consultation: Consults and coordinates with appropriate school staff, RTC staff, parents and other professionals regarding assessment and therapy of the children.
- Treatment Team: Participates in the treatment team process by attending appropriate meetings and conferences including interdisciplinary staff meetings updating the children’s progress, intake/pre-placement staffings, speech therapy meetings, annual and final reviews.
- Reports: Prepares initial and final and reevaluation speech and language reports.
- Training: Conducts in-service training when requested for teachers, parent groups and/or RTC staff that pertain to speech and language skills.
- Communication/Coordination: Coordinates scheduling changes, medical issues and other significant program issues with supervisor and other appropriate staff in accordance with outlined procedures for communication/coordination.
- Professional Development: Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in the area of speech and language and provide expertise in long range planning for the Hammitt School program.
- Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement.
