BASIC FUNCTION: The Program Assistant assists the Teacher Therapist and other classroom/support staff in providing a comprehensive education and behavioral program for students with autism, learning and/or behavioral disabilities. Also assists with behavioral intervention, supervising classroom activities collecting data, organizing materials, and implementing strategies consistent with the social learning model of the program. 


  1. Implement Instructional Program: Assists in implementing activities related to the behavioral/education program. The implementation of the activities will be under the direction of the certified staff.  Assists certified staff with behavioral and crisis intervention with students.
  2. Progress Reporting: Assists in collecting and preparing behavioral data on each child to be used in establishing and evaluating individual educational programs.
  3. Organize, Inventory, and Prepare Instructional Equipment: Responsible, under the direction of the certified staff, for preparing and organizing materials needed for the daily lesson plan implementation, including reading the lesson plans ahead of time, determining which materials were to be used, setting up, and organizing materials at the beginning and end of the day.
  4. Interdisciplinary Team Structure:
  5. Cooperates with the administrative/supervisory, certified, or other support staff in planning for and scheduling services for students.
  6. Attends staffings and meetings to learn/share special information regarding children.
  7. Materials and Supplies – Assists the classroom staff in inventory and ordering of supplies necessary to implement the planned education program.
  8. Long Range Planning – Attends Hammitt School staff meetings as requested and participates in planning for the needs of the total school program.
  9. Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement activities.


SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: Transports children to and from approved activities and field trips within the community, as assigned. 





  1. High School diploma or equivalent and Paraprofessional approval (or ability to obtain upon hire) required. Substitute Teacher licensure in the State of Illinois preferred.
  2. One year of experience working with children with autism, learning, behavioral and/or developmental disabilities preferred.
  3. Good physical and emotional health, including the physical ability to implement The Baby Fold’s approved physical crisis intervention procedures.
  4. Willingness to work under the direction of the Teacher Therapist in an interdisciplinary team structure.
  5. Knowledge of utilizing behavioral approaches working with children.
  6. Ability and willingness to travel for job responsibilities preferred, including a valid Illinois driver’s license, which has not been revoked or suspended within the past three years and use of a personal vehicle with adequate insurance.
  7. Must pass drug screen and necessary background checks.
  8. Demonstrated competence in serving a culturally diverse population. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
