Duties

The Director of Special Education will plan, coordinate, and supervise the operation of the special education department in such a way as to promote the overall efficiency of the school system and maximize the educational opportunities and benefits available for each individual child and will assure the provision of appropriate educational programs and services for children with disabiliites.

Qualifications

The candidate must hold, or be eligible to hold, an Illinois administrative certificate with approval by the Illinois State Board of Education as a Director of Special Education. The candidate must have a minimum of five years of special education teaching or school services personnel experience, as well as experience working with a diverse community and student population. Previous employment as a Director or Assistant Director of Special Education is preferred. The individual must be a proven educator who is committed to the special education needs of students and who is a strong advocate for children with a philosophy of continuous improvement. The candidate must have a knowledge of federal and state special education statues, regulations, school law and special education law, and a knowledge of the impact of RtI on Special Education. The individual must be a strong fiscal manager with the ability to manage a budget and fiscal resources with a thorough understanding of special education finance issues, including local, state, and federal funding resources and reimbursements.

Salary/Benefits

The entry level base salary for this position for a candidate with no previous administrative experience is $116,725.  Additional compensation is offered based on previous successful administrative experience. The District pays 100% of the Teachers' Retirement (pension) System (TRS) contribution. Single health, dental, and life insurance premiums are also covered at 100%. Sick, personal, and vacations days are provided.
