Duties

In addition to various duties that may be assigned by the Principal, the English Department Chair:
? Develops the vision and leads the English Department in alignment with building and District goals
? Possesses the knowledge and expertise to lead departmental work in the development and coordination
of curriculum, assessments, and SEL growth according to building and district guidelines
? Possesses the knowledge and expertise to lead and support building-wide literacy framework
initiatives
? Engages the staff in the study, development, implementation, and feedback of effective teaching and
learning practices, including appropriate literacy strategies/routines
? Supervises and evaluates English and Reading teachers and teaching assistants using the Danielson
Framework
? Possesses the knowledge and expertise to lead departmental Professional Learning Teams
? Possesses the knowledge and expertise to use research and data to inform decision making regarding
student outcomes
? Possesses the knowledge and expertise to coordinate a standards-based MTSS (RtI) program
? Coordinates the schedules for departmental instructional supports including writing labs and/or
tutoring centers
English Department Chair – Maine East – 2019-2020
? Directs and supervises the English and Reading programs
? Teaches one class within the English Department
? Assists in developing and managing the master schedule for English and Reading classes
? Collaborates with the building leadership team and the District English leadership team
? Recommends candidates for teaching positions to the Principal
? Develops and manages the department budget
? Maintains equipment and supplies for the department
? Articulates the English program with the sending schools
? Engages parents and community members in program advocacy
? Represents the school at local and regional meetings
? Works to build consensus both as a leader and as a member of the department
? Fosters collaboration, reflection, and growth with staff
? Supports educators to grow professionally and personally

Qualifications

CERTIFICATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
The specific standards, which relate to certification requirements for this position are established in and
governed by statutory regulations (The School Code of Illinois, Section 21). A major job responsibility of this
position includes the evaluation and supervision of certified staff members. Those requirements include a valid
Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with at least one of the following endorsements:
? Teacher Leader Endorsement with an in-field graduate degree;
? General Administrative Endorsement (formerly known as Type 75);
? Principal Endorsement
In addition to the licensing requirement, the qualified candidate must have completed the Growth through
Learning Teacher Performance Evaluator Training Program.


PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS
It is expected that as a minimum, the candidate will present:
? Master’s degree in English, Reading & Literacy, and/or Language Arts
? A record of demonstrated personal and professional competence through at least seven to ten years of
exemplary high school teaching of English or Literacy-focused teaching and/or leadership
? A record of professional activities related to the teaching of English or Literacy-based practice
demonstrating the potential for leadership
? A record of demonstrated sensitivity to students, staff, parents, and community

Salary/Benefits

The starting date is July 29, 2019
? The work year is the regular school term plus two weeks (195 days)
? The base salary range is $122,000 - $140,000 (includes Board-paid TRS contribution)
? An additional merit stipend up to approximately $20,000 may also be awarded for achievement of
goals as described in the Administrative Performance Appraisal Program.
